Wonderful history, wonderful food


The original pie and mash shops of London sold eel pies, thanks to the proliferation of eels in the River Thames. However, the price rose dramatically in the early 17th century, so cuts of meat were used instead. For many of us, meat pies represent a sense of tradition, especially when they are accompanied by a generous serving of smooth, creamy mashed potato. London has given us so many things, but surely pie and mash has to be at the top of the list.
